Heavenly Myths, written by British history teacher and writer Arnold J. Peterson from Warwick, is an in-depth exploration of Greek mythology, delving into the epic stories of Zeus, Prometheus, and Kronos. For this project, Peterson sought a design that would capture the grandeur and mystique of ancient Greek culture.
Our goal was to develop a visual identity that not only respects the classical Greek aesthetic but also reimagines it for a modern audience. By drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Greek heritage, we aimed to convey the mythical essence of these legendary figures, presenting them with a fresh, contemporary perspective.
This design pays homage to the past while breathing new life into these timeless tales, offering a connection to ancient stories through a modern artistic lens.
Zeus and Ganymedes, depicted in an illustration inspired by an ancient Greek vase
Cover page visual featuring a statue of Zeus inside a temple dedicated to him. The design is a composite of images, with the central illustration being an ancient engraving titled "Zeus at Olympia," created in 1721 by the artist Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723).
The composition of both the first and fourth designs is deeply symbolic, drawing inspiration from Greek motifs. The illustration of Zeus sitting on a couch is based on a depiction from an ancient Greek vase that I reinterpreted. On the back of the book, I chose to feature Zeus' brothers, Poseidon and Hades, represented by their tridents. Hades' trident, belonging to Pluto, is positioned at the bottom to signify his reign over the underworld.
